Ecommerce, like any other commerce is all about doing business and making it as successful as possible. In ecommerce you work from a website and this is the equivalent of your shop window.
Before you start doing business there are a number of things to do.

The first thing is to decide on your domain and brand name. Your brand name may have been already established but your domain name should describe what you sell and needs to use your main keywords. Keywords are the magnets that are going to draw people to your site and need to be carefully chosen.

Content is the main body of your website. This consists of articles and information about your products or services. These must be relevant, informative and very interesting, as well as keyword rich. You should have a substantial number of articles prepared before you launch your website. They are usually divided into homepage, sub-pages, and even further into categories and sub-categories. The appearance of your website is as important as a shop window. People are just not interested if it is boring. Its style should be geared towards what type of searcher you are targeting.

Most important point to note is that it must not be confusing. Remember, unlike inside a shop, there is no-one there to show them the way if they get lost. Most people love a big store with lots of products, so size is not the issue. All your navigation aids must be clear and simple and yet interesting; user-friendly for both searchers and spiders. Many times people just look somewhere else if the navigation are confusing and the information obscure.

Framing your articles within your website can cause problems for spiders and linking, so avoid doing this. Web feeds and blogs can attract a lot of interest and draw people back again and again.

You need to educate yourself continually about keywords, SEO skills, and new trends, ideas and marketing strategies. Get to know what your competitors are doing. Check out their sites, products and what they do to draw customers. Especially analyse the really successful sites on the front pages of Google. You can learn a lot from them.
