Many new marketers and webmasters are not really aware of how exactly SEO works. If you are serious about getting tons of free targeted traffic to your site then you have to learn at least basic SEO. From looking for solutions to their problems to finding reviews on products, people turn to the internet as a shopping resource. By ignoring search engine traffic you are missing out on thousands of prospects that you could sell to or build a list with. The simple equation is high ranking = money. Instead of going over the best practices, we are going to inform you about the things to avoid at all costs. Remember that SEO doesn't have any short cuts and if you do see any, then they won't last long and you'll ultimately get de-indexed.

Number one mistake: terrible on-site SEO, it not only helps you rank well but helps your visitors navigate your site better. This is a factor of your SEO strategy that cannot be ignored and one of the few that you have control over. On-page SEO is nothing more than the way you decide to structure your site and its content. For instance, all your pages should have the heading tags placed properly, along with the ALT tags, file names and titles. Including your main keywords in each element will make your site more search engine friendly. On-site SEO makes your site easier for your visitor to navigate and easier for you to manage. Your competition will be using these basic techniques so you should take it a step further. Don't make the mistake of stealing the content from other websites, it's not ethical. You can't just copy content and hope that it's going to help you, because it won't. While you may get away with it at first, eventually people will understand that you're plagiarizing. The other reason why it's a good idea to stay away from this is due to the fact that search engines now know when content has been replicated. Your site will stick in the filter that's reserved for double content and that will not rank you very high. This is the main reason why it's crucial for search engines as well as visitors to like the content that you use.

Link spamming is when someone distributes their URL across the web to get incoming links, while getting links is important; you will be penalized if you get too many at once. When a person launches a website, he/she reads that creating thousands of links will get you on the first page of Google. Methods like these used to work but they are now dead. It's not worth it to spam your link out and suffer the consequences of getting your new site de-indexed and sandboxed, and it will get sandboxed if it is a new site receiving hundreds of incoming links. The big secret is to build links slow and steady.

So, if you want to simplify things, you can break SEO into on-page and off-page. As you gain experience you will automatically start to notice what works best for your site; but continue to add content and getting relevant backlinks. So, now you have it; quality backlinks, internally linking related pages, on-site optimization, and patience.
