Attracting plenty of good quality traffic is a key element of success for anu online business wanting to see positive results. It's relatively easy to learn to optimize your site in order to receive this kind of traffic directly from search engines. Unfortunately there are some Internet marketers who make a point of working on ways to fool the search engines instead of using proven optimization tactics. And so many websites using these less ethical tactics end up getting banned from the big search engines. Of course there are some webmasters who don't know that what they're doing is unethical. In these scenarios, the webmaster's lack of knowledge could be the cause of risking a website's success with such bad decisions. A big part of getting SEO right is also knowing what you're doing wrong. Let's look at some of the SEO mistakes you should be mindful of during your optimization efforts.

On-page SEO is very important but it is the most overlooked problem. This is a factor of your SEO strategy that cannot be ignored and one of the few that you have control over. On-page SEO is nothing more than the way you decide to structure your site and its content. For instance, all your pages should have the heading tags placed properly, along with the ALT tags, file names and titles. Including your main keywords in each element will make your site more search engine friendly. On-site optimization is one of the search engine's ways of giving higher ranking to the sites that will give their searchers the best experience. Your competition is doing on-site optimization but many are going to still be failing the test we are about to study for.

Choosing the wrong keywords is another mistake that webmasters make. Keywords are important because they are the searcher's way of telling you what he is looking for. How can you convert visitors who don't want what you have? If you base your web pages on phrases that people aren't searching for then your site will never be found by anyone. With the right keywords you are off to a running start; with the wrong keywords you might as well start over because you won't win the race. The key is to locate lower competition keywords and to build your content around them. There are a number of free keyword tools that you can use to generate relevant keywords for your site.

You must build links in order to stay competitive but getting too many at once will alert Google that you are a possible spammer and they will penalize your site. When a person launches a website, he/she reads that creating thousands of links will get you on the first page of Google. These spam tactics do not work anymore. Do your SEO the right way from the beginning because Google is very strict on new sites and will sandbox you for the littlest misstep, like spamming your link on other people's sites. Link building is necessary in the competitive online environment of today but you will actually outrank your competition by getting links a few links a day, consistently.

See, SEO isn't as complicated as it seems, just stick to the basics and you will be doing better than most. Don't forget to keep adding quality content and getting relevant backlinks to point back to the pages for even better ranking. It seems that Google is placing a large emphasis on the number of relevant backlinks that a site has so it would be wise to focus a little bit more of your time on getting them.
