Advice on web design can be found all over the net. But is it the advice you need, and can you trust it? There's a lot to learn about web design, and all kinds of people will give you all kinds of advice about how to do it 'their' way. There are some guidelines you should go by once you start your journey to being good at web design, and we'll look at some of them here.

There are tons of different elements that make up what we call 'web design'. You can't be the best at all of them, because there are simply too many to hold that title. But knowing what parts you do best will go a long way toward being successful in it. That way you aren't wasting your time and efforts trying to do things that are better left to those who are better at it. Stay focused on your expertise.

Once you've nailed down what you're good at, then you need to choose your market. Understand the people who need your services in your area of expertise. Get a picture in your mind about who it is that would hire you. Be firm about what products or services you plan to provide and know exactly what part of web design you're going to supply to people. Be comfortable with the parts you plan to do.

Some good advice about web design is knowing what size jobs you want to take on. Are you interested in big jobs for some big clientele, or just doing some small jobs for individuals or small companies. Learning 'where' to market yourself is as important as 'how'. There are a lot of web design people who just aren’t interested in being tied down to a 'corporate' lifestyle, so they go about web design work from a freelance perspective.

Being a freelancer in web design means that starting off, you'll need to create a few sites for marketing yourself to others. Then you can even volunteer yourself to build sites for other people to get your reputation started. Then people will begin to offer to pay you. You shouldn't let the fact that you don't get paid at first make you feel like the job you do isn't important. It'll pay off soon enough.

Again, some of the best advice on web design is finding your niche in the process. Know what types of sites you do your best work with. Then once you begin to get paid for your services, you need to find an amount to charge. The way most freelancers approach this is getting paid 'by the project'. You need to find a way that distinguished you from other freelance web design workers. It should be a strong point in your selling of yourself, and the reason why people choose you to build their site as opposed to someone else. When needed, go the extra mile for your client. Word of mouth becomes your best advertising when you're a freelancer.
