Site's Ranking in Search Engines? Empty Site's Ranking in Search Engines?

Post  Kunal Singh Fri Jan 07, 2011 12:54 am

It has been a very common question among many webmasters, "Will changing web host or IP address affect my site’s ranking in search engine results?" The answer is yes, but chances are low. This problem can be easily avoided if you follow the proper procedure while switching to another web hosting.

Moving into another web hosting requires you to change the name servers or DNS of your domain, thus why the IP address is altered. The key of changing IP address without losing Google ranking or your site’s position in any other search engines is to keep the website "alive" during the whole process of its DNS propagation. To put it simple, what you must do is to minimize the period of downtime during the whole process to make sure search engine spiders will still be able to crawl your site.

One easy way to achieve that is to keep both your old and new hosting active, and by first uploading your files into the new host beforehand. Once the propagation process is over, you can then remove the files and subscription of your old host altogether and start using the new one.

Also, you must first make sure that the IP address of your new host is not blocked or banned by search engines, which can be determined using SEO tools found in SEOmoz. On top of that, you can also consider referring to SEO Malta for more information regarding this issue and learn more about some other SEO methods.
